The Fishbowl Effect is a painting about the vulnerability of unmasking and becoming one’s authentic self for the first time. I grew up in a time when gender roles were concrete and strictly enforced. I was also the weird kid who got bullied. As a result, I imitated others and nearly entirely buried who I was to fit in. Deciding to live authentically felt awkward and downright dangerous at first. I spent so much time blending in and not standing out that I initially felt like a fish in a bowl. That experience is what this painting is all about.
This work comes ready to hang. The painting extends around the sides of the canvas. So, you only need to frame it if you want to.
